Versatility
When it comes to versatility, Chicco KeyFit 30 Magic vs KeyFit 30 Zip are pretty much the same. Both of them are suitable for kids up to 18 months, both can accommodate babies weighing between 4 and 30 lbs and up to 30 inches in height.
Zip can also be installed only in the rear-facing position, but keep in mind that this is recommended by experts as the safest car position for your baby, so it shouldn’t really be seen as an obstacle. In fact, KeyFit seats allow you to keep your little one in this safest position longer than many other seats, so it’s a win-win situation.

The padding on the upgraded model is really cool though – it can be removed extremely quickly, it’s completely machine-washable, and it looks better shaped and more comfortable too. The canopy is finally extended with a sun visor, so it works much better now. It also has a mesh section for better ventilation (although it’s fair to say that Magic has this fine feature too).
Chicco KeyFit 30 Zip is also slightly lighter, so you can expect easier and more convenient manipulation.
Safety
Chicco KeyFit 30 Zip doesn’t come with any spectacular safety-related improvements. On the other hand, its safety is pretty impressive even without any novelty. Again, it can be used with a seat base that holds the seat firmly in its place, but it’s also equipped with a European-style routed harness for baseless installation.
The five-point harness system can be adjusted according to your baby’s current height, and the padding is made of high-quality shock-absorbing foam that provides great protection in case of an accident (or just rapid braking).
Unfortunately, there’s no anti-rebound bar here either. To be honest, I would really love to see this feature on every rear-facing car seat on the market, because I’m always a little bit worried about what would happen if the carrier would collapse onto the seat in front of it at the time of impact.
